Bangkok, Thailand, 25 November 2024 – The Asian Esports Games (AEG), held in Bangkok from 25 November to 1 December 2024, commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Indoor Stadium Hua Mak in Bangkok, attended by Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), SAT officials, Mr. Santi Lothong, President of the Thailand Esports Federation, and AESF Director General, Mr. Sebastian Lau.

The ceremony highlights included Thai dance performances, a flag-bearing ceremony, and technical officials' and athletes' oath. The AEG features 29 countries and regions with 179 athletes, making it one of the biggest Asian esports events after the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022. Notably, 20 women’s teams are competing in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang women’s event, with debut entries from team Thailand, team Timor-Leste, and team China PR, among others. The eFootball event has 23 participating countries and regions, representing over half of Asia, while nine teams compete in the Arena of Valor event. 

Mr. Santi Lothong delivered a welcoming remark, stating that over the past 15 years, Thailand has transformed its esports ecosystem with support from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), driving advancements in communication, the economy, tourism, and health. Thailand is dedicated to hosting a memorable AEG and warmly welcomed all participants. 

Mr. Lau, in his speech, praised Thailand’s efforts to host the Games with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the National Sports Development Fund. He emphasized the event’s role in promoting unity, gender equality, and diversity while enhancing Thailand’s esports ecosystem ahead of the 33rd SEA Games in 2025. As the Technical Delegate, AESF ensures integrity, fairness, and sportsmanship throughout the event. 

The ceremony concluded with Dr. Kongsak delivering a speech, welcoming all participants. He also stated that the SAT recognizes esports’ potential and eagerly supports the initiative, aligning with the country’s vision. He mentioned that Thailand is pioneering a new era of esports championships in Asia, with the goal for the event to grow with future editions. Dr. Kongsak expressed his gratitude to all partners, sponsors, and supporters who made the event possible, and he welcomed and appreciated AESF's sanctioning of the AEG, ending with the official declaration of the Games open.
